Apple develops AI-Wearable-Pin – Race with OpenAI begins
Apple is apparently working on its own AI-Wearable, reports TechCrunch. The device is to be worn as a pin on clothing and comes with two cameras and three microphones. The news follows just two days after OpenAI announced that the company will introduce its first AI hardware device in the second half of 2025. This could potentially be earbuds.
Apple appears to be accelerating development due to OpenAI
The AI hardware market is thus heating up noticeably. Chris Lehane, Chief Global Affairs Officer of OpenAI, announced the highly anticipated product on Monday in Davos. Apple now seems to be accelerating the development of its own device to keep pace in the competition.
The Apple Pin is described as a thin, flat, circular disc with an aluminum-glass housing. The engineers at the US company are apparently aiming for the size of an AirTag, just slightly thicker. The device is to offer two cameras, one with a standard lens, one with a wide-angle lens. These two cameras are to be used for photos and videos. In addition, there is a physical button, a speaker, and a Fitbit-like charging strip on the back.
AI-Pin could hit the market as early as 2027
Apple could bring the Pin to market as early as 2027, with a launch volume of 20 million units. TechCrunch has asked Apple for further information; no statement has been provided so far.
Whether consumers actually want such AI devices remains questionable. Two former Apple employees founded Humane AI, a startup that also sold an AI-Pin with microphones and camera. However, the product failed spectacularly after its market launch. Humane had to cease operations within two years and sell its assets to HP.
