If you can have AI generate texts, images, videos, or entire programs, why not computer games as well? The Vienna-based startup Atlas is doing exactly that and unveiled a new AI-powered platform for automating game development today, Monday. Atlas AI Studio uses multiple AI agents to automate tasks such as generation, texturing, optimization, and engine integration.

The platform is built entirely on Google Cloud infrastructure and uses its orchestration tools such as Vertex AI. The company has already established a strategic partnership with Google Cloud in 2025 to scale the multi-agent architecture and accelerate the development of so-called AI-native games.

The system enables developers to describe desired results in natural language, whereupon the platform automatically assembles and deploys a combination of different AI models. Unlike conventional generative tools, Atlas focuses on production-ready workflows rather than the creation of individual assets. The platform acts as a creative co-pilot and enables real-time collaboration between developers and AI systems. Studios can integrate the technology directly into industry-standard pipelines such as Unreal Engine, Unity, and Houdini.

Partnership with Google Cloud as technical foundation

The collaboration with Google Cloud gives Atlas access to scalable computing infrastructure and advanced orchestration tools. The company emphasizes that AI-native games will be dynamic, personalized, and constantly evolving, requiring new creative infrastructure. The partnership aims to enable studios not only to create content, but to build the dynamic, evolving worlds that will define the next generation of interactive entertainment. Customers can operate the platform using their own Google Cloud credits.

Atlas AI Studio is now available worldwide via the Google Cloud Marketplace and is transitioning from closed beta to general availability. During the beta phase, studios such as Square Enix, PARALLEL, and Ego have already used the system. The company is also launching a free closed beta program for qualified studios and developers, offering early access to the full generative pipeline and multi-agent features. A technical director at Square Enix highlights that seamless integration into highly customized workflows enabled the delivery of high-quality, performance-optimized solutions with remarkable agility.

AI use in the gaming industry remains controversial

The launch comes at a time when developers continue to experiment with AI in game production, while players remain critical of its use. In 2023, Cyan Worlds faced criticism after players discovered that the adventure game Firmament used AI-assisted content. Voice actors protested the use of AI-generated voices in the shooter The Finals. The debate prompted some companies to publicly reject the use of AI. In January, Games Workshop, the manufacturer of Warhammer 40K, stated that the company would not use generative AI in its creative design process. Most recently, Larian Studios, the acclaimed development studio behind Baldur’s Gate 3, has fundamentally clarified its position on generative AI. In a detailed statement, co-founder Swen Vincke made clear that no AI-generated creative assets will be incorporated into the upcoming game “Divinity”.

Atlas founder and CEO Ben James argues that criticism often concerns visible AI-generated art, but not the technical work of preparing assets for games. AI can take over many non-creative aspects of game development, such as generating different levels of detail for objects created by human artists, optimizing material setups, or setting up collisions and pivot points. Players would likely not react negatively if AI helped make a game run more efficiently or assets be used more optimally. On copyright issues, responsibility remains with the developer using the technology. Anyone creating with AI may only introduce intellectual property into the system for which they have ownership or usage rights.
