Microsoft and Mistral Strike Multibillion-Dollar Pact for European AI Infra
Microsoft and Mistral AI are expanding their strategic collaboration. Following Microsoft’s existing role as an investor in Mistral, a new multibillion-dollar agreement has been announced. The goal of the cooperation is to expand computing capacity in Europe and provide AI models for regulated industries.
The expanded partnership involves integrating Mistral’s models into the Microsoft platform and providing various deployment options—ranging from the cloud to isolated environments. While Microsoft maintains ties to OpenAI and Anthropic, it has notably distanced itself from the creator of ChatGPT.
Expansion of Hardware Infrastructure
A component of the agreement is the expansion of AI infrastructure in Europe. Mistral will expand its GPU capacity through the use of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs. This infrastructure serves as a platform for the training, inference, and deployment of AI applications.
Ian Buck, Vice President at NVIDIA, described the deployment of these systems as the foundation for the next generation of AI in Europe.
Integration into the Microsoft Ecosystem
At the software level, Mistral’s models will be integrated into Microsoft products:
- Mistral Medium 3.5 will be available in Microsoft Foundry and Microsoft Copilot Studio.
- The OCR 4 model will be provided to support document processing and workflows.
This integration allows developers to access the models within the Microsoft environment.
From the Cloud to Isolated Environments
The cooperation includes various options for deploying models via Azure and Azure Local:
- Cloud: Deployment via the Azure cloud.
- Cloud-connected: Azure Local environments with connections to Azure services.
- Fully disconnected: Isolated Azure Local deployments for environments that do not use external connectivity.
Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, explained that integrating the models into the sovereign cloud portfolio allows customers to operate AI according to their own specifications.
Targeting Highly Regulated Sectors
The partnership specifically addresses sectors with regulatory requirements, such as finance, manufacturing, and healthcare. These industries utilize the models while adhering to requirements regarding data sovereignty and operational processes.
Arthur Mensch, Co-Founder and CEO of Mistral, called Microsoft a partner for the global scaling of models in regulated workloads. To promote adoption, both companies are planning joint measures, including the funding of Proof-of-Concepts (PoCs) and the conduct of workshops.
