Apple Lets Gemini, and Claude in iOS 27, Will End ChatGPT Exclusivity

Apple plans to introduce a new system with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 that gives users the choice between various third-party chatbots. Bloomberg reports this. According to the report, AI services such as Google Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT will in the future be able to be deeply integrated into the operating system.
How the new system works
The integration takes place via a new extension system called “Extensions”. Users will be able to find the corresponding settings under “Apple Intelligence & Siri” in the system settings. There, they can specify which AI service they prefer to use. Apple also provides download links for the respective chatbot apps.
The functionality is modeled on the existing ChatGPT integration: if Siri cannot answer a request on its own, the assistant suggests forwarding the question to the selected third-party chatbot. Users can also directly instruct Siri to query a specific AI.
In addition to Siri, compatible third-party models will also be able to take over other Apple Intelligence features, including Writing Tools and Image Playground. According to Gurman, Apple is already internally testing integrations with Google and Anthropic.
Different voices for different models
Apple also plans to enable different Siri voices for different AI models. Responses from Apple’s own model could thus have a different voice than responses generated via ChatGPT or another third-party model. This is intended to help users clearly distinguish the active AI source.
End of OpenAI exclusivity
Until now, OpenAI’s ChatGPT was the only external AI service integrated into Apple Intelligence. With the introduction of the Extensions system, this exclusive position comes to an end. The previous partnership had sparked controversy; among other things, Elon Musk’s company xAI had sued Apple and OpenAI over alleged anti-competitive practices.
The opening could also be economically interesting for Apple: the company is said to earn a share of AI subscriptions taken out through the App Store. The AI providers, for their part, must implement support for the new system in iOS 27.
Apple’s own Siri chatbot remains in development
In parallel with the opening to external providers, Apple continues to work on a comprehensive overhaul of Siri. The voice assistant is set to be developed into a full-fledged chatbot based on Google’s Gemini models. Apple is said to have paid a billion-dollar sum for the right to create distillates of Gemini — naturally because the company itself has not developed any notable AI models of its own. The Extensions system complements this plan by additionally giving users the choice to forward requests to alternative services.
Presentation at WWDC in June 2026
Apple plans to present the new features on June 8, 2026, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Which features will be available at launch and which may only follow in later updates is not yet known.
