Perplexity Now Gets Inspired by OpenClaw
An AI agent that runs on a Mac Mini around the clock and can be controlled from a smartphone? That sounds somehow familiar? Exactly, namely from OpenClaw by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger. His concept, which earned him a job at OpenAI and fame, is now catching on. Now Perplexity has let itself be inspired by the concept.
The AI company Perplexity announced today a new product called “Personal Computer” that is conceptually similar to the OpenClaw approach of a personal AI assistant. The solution is based on a continuously running Mac Mini and is intended to be available to users around the clock.
From Perplexity Computer to Personal Computer
Last month, Perplexity had already introduced “Perplexity Computer,” a first version of a personal AI assistant. With “Personal Computer,” the company is now taking a step further. The new implementation uses a Mac mini that runs permanently and connects local applications with Perplexity Computer.
CEO Aravind Srinivas described the product in an announcement as an “always on, local merge” with Perplexity Computer that works 24/7 for users. The system is personal, secure, and works across files, apps, and sessions.
Functionality and Security Concept
Personal Computer differs from traditional operating systems through its fundamental approach: while classic systems take instructions, an AI operating system works with objectives. The system acts as a persistent digital representative of the user and can be controlled from any device.
Perplexity emphasizes several security mechanisms:
- Every sensitive action requires user approval
- All actions are logged
- There is an emergency shutdown (kill switch)
- The system runs in a secure environment
The Personal Computer runs on a desktop Mac computer that is connected to local apps and Perplexity’s secure servers. Users receive permanent, local access to files, applications, and sessions of their machine via a compact desktop.
Mac Mini as AI Hardware
Interested users can now sign up for a waiting list. Perplexity plans to support the first user group with support and resources. A concrete start date for general access was not announced.
The announcement fits into a trend in which Apple’s Mac mini is increasingly being used as a preferred computer for AI applications in the cloud. Apple also plans to manufacture some Mac mini computers in the United States for the first time later this year.
Conceptual Proximity to OpenClaw
The concept of Personal Computer shows clear parallels to the OpenClaw idea of a personal AI assistant. Both approaches aim to grant AI systems expanded access to local resources while simultaneously implementing security mechanisms. Perplexity positions its product as a practical implementation of this vision with a focus on user-friendliness and control.
