Amazon plans to massively expand its drone delivery service in the United States, The Verge reports. The e-commerce giant’s drones are set to deliver to nearly 500 American cities and towns by the end of this year — a sixfold increase compared to its current coverage area.
Prime Air Has Delivered Hundreds of Thousands of Packages
According to Amazon’s announcement, Prime Air deliveries will soon be available in the metropolitan areas of Chicago (Illinois), Syracuse (New York), Cleveland (Ohio), Atlanta (Georgia), and Boise (Idaho). Additional communities are expected to follow throughout the year.
These expansions build on the 11 existing US locations where Amazon already offers drone delivery. Each Prime Air location covers an area of nearly 300 square kilometers. The service aims to deliver packages weighing up to just over two kilograms quickly. According to David Carbon, Vice President of Amazon Prime Air, the company has already delivered “hundreds of thousands of packages to customers” this year. Carbon noted that most orders reached their destination approximately 60 minutes after being placed.
Amazon Service Also Launched in England in 2026
In connection with these expansion plans, Amazon reiterated its drone safety measures, including Prime Air’s “industry-leading detect-and-avoid system.” This is likely an attempt to minimize potential community concerns, as these drones have already drawn criticism following collisions with cranes, internet cables, gardens, and a residential building.
Amazon also intends to introduce drone deliveries in Europe, though the company is still in the early stages there. Since February, Prime Air has been serving the area around the English city of Darlington. Other European countries are not yet at that point, but at least in Italy the service is reportedly set to launch in the future.
