They’re currently in the driver’s seat — and they’re pressing their advantage accordingly: After pushing into areas like coding, design, productivity, and cybersecurity, Anthropic is now targeting one of the most lucrative and complex professional markets with its AI assistant Claude: the legal sector. With “Claude Legal Solutions,” the US-based AI company is presenting a specialized platform for law firms and legal departments. The move is noteworthy because Anthropic is thereby entering into direct competition with startups that have themselves been relying on Claude models.

Anthropic is on a roll right now and could soon overtake arch-rival OpenAI in terms of valuation. According to rumors, the company led by CEO Dario Amodei could soon be worth more than $900 billion (more on that here). LegalTech-related stocks such as those of Thomson Reuters, DocuSign, Intapp, and Wolters Kluwer reacted noticeably downward to the announcement of Claude Legal, though not as sharply as cybersecurity or SaaS stocks had previously:

What Claude Legal Is Supposed to Do

The offering is aimed at legal teams that deal daily with contract analysis, research, and the drafting of legal briefs. According to Anthropic, Claude takes over the time-intensive routine tasks so that lawyers can focus on strategic decisions.

Specifically, Anthropic is promoting the following core features:

  • Legal research with structured memos and verified source citations, connected to databases such as Thomson Reuters
  • Contract redlining with tracked changes directly in Microsoft Word, without leaving the familiar working environment
  • M&A due diligence across multiple documents, delegatable as a multi-step task
  • Regulatory and compliance analyses, for example on the EU AI Act or data protection issues
  • Outside counsel management and NDA triage via specialized plugins

A particular feature is the traceability of results. Every output is intended to be traceable back to its source. An example from the product materials shows a research summary on the EU AI Act in which individual claims are explicitly marked as “Verified” or “Confirm” and reference specific article numbers.

Integration into Existing Legal Infrastructure

Anthropic is betting on deep integration into the tools that legal professionals already use. Claude accordingly connects with document management systems such as iManage and NetDocuments, with contract platforms such as DocuSign and Ironclad, and with the Thomson Reuters research database.

For day-to-day work, Anthropic offers two central access points:

  • Claude for Microsoft 365: Integration directly into Word and Outlook, including full redlining with tracked changes
  • Claude Cowork: An environment for multi-step tasks, where users can delegate complex assignments and collect finished results

The offering is complemented by practice-specific plugins for areas such as Commercial Legal, Corporate Legal, IP, and Litigation. These are intended to be configurable with a firm’s own playbook and house style.

Data Privacy as a Selling Point

For the sensitive legal sector, Anthropic places particular emphasis on confidentiality. On Team and Enterprise plans, customer data is not used for model training by default. The company promises complete audit trails and enterprise security standards.

“Claude clears the bar for sensitive matters and privileged work, so your team can focus on strategy and high-stakes work, worry-free.”

How seriously Anthropic takes its own product is illustrated by an internal example: Mark Pike, Associate General Counsel at Anthropic, describes in a company video how the company’s own legal team used Claude to build workflows that reduced review times from days to hours.

Competition with Harvey and Legora: When the Supplier Becomes the Rival

The strategically most sensitive aspect of this move is the direct competition with legal tech startups that have themselves been built on Claude models. Among the most prominent are Harvey and Legora, both with billion-dollar valuations and a strong foothold in major law firms.

Harvey and Legora developed their products on the basis of Anthropic’s models, invested millions in sales and law firm partnerships, and positioned themselves as a specialized layer between the base model and the end customer. Anthropic is now entering precisely this market with its own offering.

The pattern is familiar from other areas of technology. Amazon built competing services with AWS-native offerings against startups that had been built on its cloud infrastructure. Apple displaced third-party providers from the App Store with native apps. For Harvey and Legora, the question now arises whether their added value compared to a product offered directly by the model provider will remain convincing in the long term.

Social Ambition: Democratizing Access to Justice

Alongside the commercial offering, Anthropic is also communicating a social mission. The company is cooperating with the Free Law Project and the Justice Technology Association to make legal assistance more affordable. Qualified legal clinics and public defenders are to receive discounted access to Claude through the “Claude for Nonprofits” program.

Whether this approach actually improves access to justice or primarily serves as a reputational gain remains to be seen. What is clear is this: with Claude Legal, Anthropic has staked an explicit claim to a market that was previously dominated by specialized startups — using their own technological foundation.
