Google Launches Gemini Tools to Lure ChatGPT and Claude Users Away

Google has announced a series of new features for its AI application Gemini, specifically designed to encourage users of other AI services — such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude — to switch. The focus is on personalization features and practical import tools intended to make the transition as seamless as possible.

As previously reported, Anthropic had already introduced a similar import tool for Claude. At the time, the goal was to capitalize on the momentum following the setback for OpenAI in the wake of the Pentagon deal, in order to get as many users as possible to switch sides.

Personalization as the central argument

With the new “Saved Information” feature, Gemini will in future learn from past conversations and permanently store user preferences. The idea behind it: the longer someone uses the service, the more relevant and personal the responses should become. Google describes the goal as an assistant that “evolves with your needs instead of delivering one-size-fits-all answers.”

The feature is enabled by default but can be turned off at any time in the settings. According to Google, users retain full control over their stored data and can delete conversations at any time.

Directly addressing those willing to switch

Particularly notable is the fact that Google explicitly addresses the barrier that switching between AI services entails in its announcement. The company acknowledges that starting over with an assistant that doesn’t know you “can feel daunting,” and positions its new switching tools as a direct response to this problem.

“We believe the most helpful AI assistant is one that is tailored to you personally and understands your preferences and past conversations.”

With this line of reasoning, Google is clearly targeting users who have already gained experience with competing products and do not want to lose the accumulated context they have built up.

Two concrete tools for switching

Google is providing two separate import features designed to make switching from other AI platforms easier:

  • Memory import: Users can transfer saved preferences, personal information, and context data from other AI apps into Gemini. To do so, a pre-made prompt is inserted into the previous app, which then generates a summary of the stored information. This summary is subsequently imported into Gemini.
  • Chat history import: By uploading a ZIP file, complete conversation histories from other AI services can be integrated into Gemini. Users can then search through these histories directly in Gemini and build on them.

Both features are set to roll out gradually to all personal accounts over the coming weeks and will then be accessible via the Gemini app’s settings.
