Deutsche Börse Group has announced a strategic investment of USD 200 million in the globally operating crypto exchange Kraken (Payward, Inc.). By acquiring existing shares through a secondary market transaction, Deutsche Börse secures a fully diluted ownership stake of 1.5 percent in the company’s core market infrastructure. Kraken’s valuation stands at USD 13.3 billion.

Kraken currently ranks 14th by trading volume among the world’s largest crypto exchanges, though it was previously ranked much higher. Most recently, the US company halted its IPO plans; originally, a public listing was planned for 2026 at a valuation of approximately USD 20 billion. However, the crypto market has since shifted markedly into a bear phase.

Deepening an Already Existing Partnership

The investment is not an entirely new strategic direction, but rather the next step in an already ongoing collaboration. The strategic partnership between Deutsche Börse and Kraken was publicly announced as early as December 2025. With the capital stake now following, Deutsche Börse underscores its long-term interest in close integration with the crypto ecosystem.

Kraken is one of the world’s largest and most well-known crypto exchanges, with a broad institutional client base and an established infrastructure for trading digital assets. Deutsche Börse, for its part, brings decades of experience in operating regulated market infrastructures, in clearing, as well as in the custody and settlement of financial instruments.

Strategy: Bridge Between Traditional and Digital Markets

The stated goal of the partnership is to build a hybrid market infrastructure capable of processing traditional securities and blockchain-native tokens within a unified liquidity pool. Deutsche Börse is thereby pursuing a strategy that views digital assets not as a parallel system, but as an integral component of a shared financial market infrastructure.

Specifically, the following areas are to be jointly developed and expanded:

  • Trading: Regulated offerings in cryptocurrencies, tokenized markets, and derivatives
  • Custody and Settlement: Joint solutions for the secure management of digital assets
  • Collateral Management: Efficient use of collateral across both ecosystems
  • Tokenized Assets: Opening up new product categories at the intersection of capital markets and blockchain
  • Institutional Liquidity: Expanded market access for institutional clients across various regions

Institutional Clients in Focus

The partnership is aimed primarily at institutional market participants. Banks, asset managers, and other professional investors are to gain access to both traditional and digital markets via a unified platform in the future. In doing so, both companies are responding to growing demand from the institutional segment for regulated, integrated solutions in the area of digital assets.

“The investment is a testament to Deutsche Börse Group’s strategy in the area of digital assets. This aims to create a comprehensive, hybrid market infrastructure that processes assets of any technical form, including traditional securities and blockchain-native tokens, within a unified liquidity pool,” reads a statement from Deutsche Börse Group.

Transaction Completion Still Pending

The transaction had not yet been fully completed at the time of the announcement. Closing is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected in the second quarter of 2026. The investment is part of a broader trend: established exchange infrastructure providers worldwide are increasingly positioning themselves in the area of digital assets so as not to fall behind in a growing asset class.

For Deutsche Börse, which operates with more than 16,000 employees at locations around the world, the stake in Kraken represents a concrete step toward future-proofing its own infrastructure and expanding its offering for institutional clients.
