Bitcoin Climbs to $79,000 as Greed Returns to the Crypto Market

Bitcoin is trading at around $79,000, its highest level since May. The recovery has now run for several sessions and has pulled the wider market along with it: across the major altcoins, weekly gains range from 17 percent to more than 67 percent.
The main driver behind the move is forced position closures. According to The Coin Republic, traders lost roughly $4 billion on bets against the market over the four days of the advance. In a single session alone, CoinGlass counted $742 million in liquidated short positions. Anyone still betting on a further decline had to buy back exposure at higher prices, which accelerated the rally.
Greed Index Jumps to 80 Points
The shift in sentiment shows up clearly in the Fear and Greed Index published by CoinMarketCap, which maps market mood on a scale from 0 to 100. The gauge now sits at 80, squarely in greed territory. Only days ago it stood at 46 and therefore in the fear zone, according to BeInCrypto, before jumping to 62 overnight. That makes it one of the sharpest sentiment swings of the year so far.
Volatility and market momentum each account for a quarter of the index, and both components moved sharply as prices climbed. Analysts tend to read high readings as a warning signal as well, because they often coincide with overheated phases.

The biggest gain belongs to Zcash. The privacy coin added roughly 67 percent over the week, extending a rally that had been interrupted by steep pullbacks along the way. XRP, up almost 52 percent, and Hyperliquid, up a good 37 percent, are also ahead of Bitcoin. The CMC20 index, which tracks the 20 largest crypto assets, stands at plus 26.3 percent over seven days. Many altcoins nonetheless remain far below their own peaks after the heavy selling wave that hit the market in early summer, as Trending Topics reported.
Key Levels Ahead
On the upside, on-chain analyst Ali Martinez points to a larger supply cluster between $83,307 and $84,569 that is likely to act as resistance. On the downside, the zone around $70,500 is considered support. CryptoQuant’s Bull Score, which bundles ten individual indicators, recently crossed 60 for the first time since October 2025, with six of its ten components turning positive.
How durable the move proves to be is still an open question. A substantial share of the advance rests on liquidations, an effect that fades once the relevant positions have been cleared out. Whether fresh capital follows, through the spot ETFs for instance, will likely determine if the price can hold above $79,000.
