Revolut Apologizes to Customers After Google Cloud Outage

First the outage, now the apology: Revolut has just emailed its customers to apologize for last Tuesday’s disruption, when a Google Cloud outage knocked out the neobank’s services for hours. In the email, which Trending Topics has seen, Revolut assures customers that their money and data are safe and were protected throughout the disruption.
Card Payments Still Need a Few Days
The problem was fixed the same day, and Revolut is working normally again, the company wrote. For some users, though, the matter is not quite over: Anyone who made a card payment or received a card refund during the disruption will need to be patient. According to Revolut, it may take a few days for their balance to update and for the transaction to appear in their account. The company said it is working to process these transactions as quickly as possible. For questions, Revolut points customers to its in-app chat, which it says is staffed around the clock.
A Power Problem in London
According to Google, the disruption was triggered by a “power event,” a problem with the power supply in its London cloud region, europe-west2. It took about eight hours for most services to come back. During that time, Revolut customers were unable to use card payments, transfers, ATM withdrawals, and stock and crypto trading, among other things.
Revolut was not the only company affected. ING in Germany, the British banks Lloyds, Halifax and HSBC, the parcel service DPD and the app of Britain’s National Health Service also had problems. The incident shows once again how dependent even large financial service providers are on a handful of cloud providers.
