Allica Bank: British Fintech Raises $155 Million for SME Banking, Becomes Unicorn
British Allica Bank has completed a Series D funding round of $155 million, reaching a valuation of just under $1.2 billion. The digital bank for small and medium-sized enterprises has secured the funds from Ventura Capital, GLG, Sona AM, and existing investors TCV and Blue Owl. The majority of the round consists of common equity, supplemented by additional Tier-1 capital. With this, Allica rises to become Europe’s newest unicorn.
The challenger bank positions itself as a digital bank for established SMEs with typically 5 to 250 employees and offers a full-stack of services via proprietary technology. The Financial Times ranked Allica second among Europe’s fastest-growing companies in March 2025.
Capital Flows into Credit Growth, AI, and International Expansion
The fresh funds are intended to accelerate credit growth and deepen investments in Allica’s proprietary tech stack. A key focus lies on AI technology to transform lending opportunities for established SMEs. For the first time, the bank is also planning to expand beyond its British home market into international markets. Over the past five years, Allica has scaled its balance sheet to nearly £4 billion in SME loans and over £5 billion in deposits.
Currently, Allica serves over 30,000 established SMEs in the UK—roughly 5 percent of its target market. By 2028, the bank aims for 10 percent market penetration among established SMEs. The aggressive growth strategy relies on the combination of fast credit processing, reliability, and proprietary technology.
Investors See Allica as a Frontrunner
Lucy Rigby, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, commented on the funding round: “The UK is a fintech powerhouse and this Government is doubling down on measures that will enable the sector to grow. This government is helping to unlock investment into firms like Allica, supporting better finance for innovative British businesses, and showcasing UK financial services on the global stage.”
Mo El Husseiny, Managing Partner at Ventura Capital, emphasizes: “Allica is a world class business that is executing exceptionally well in a large, underserved market.” Michael Kalfayan, General Partner at TCV, sees Allica as “as a frontrunner in applying AI across front and back office processes in financial services.”
Allica CEO Richard Davies summed up the strategic significance: “We’re building the category defining digital bank for established SMBs, and are excited to be taking our proprietary platform into new markets. This Series D investment is a major vote of confidence in Allica’s strategy and performance.”
