Technology giant Google (Alphabet) intends to invest up to 40 billion dollars in AI company Anthropic. This cements Google’s position as one of the company’s most important strategic backers and places it among a remarkable circle of investors that includes, among others, Amazon and Microsoft.

The Google–Anthropic alliance is clearly aimed at current market leader OpenAI, which is approaching one billion users with ChatGPT. While Google attacks the B2C market with Gemini, Anthropic has already taken the lead in the B2B sector.

Structure of the Investment

According to Anthropic, Google is initially committing to an immediate cash payment of 10 billion dollars. Anthropic’s valuation stands at 350 billion dollars, matching the level of the last funding round in February. A further 30 billion dollars is to follow, provided Anthropic meets certain performance targets.

In addition to the financial stake, Google is significantly expanding its role as an infrastructure provider. Through Google Cloud, the company will make 5 gigawatts of computing capacity available to Anthropic over the next five years, with the option for further scaling.

A Remarkable Cap Table

Google has already been an investor in Anthropic for some time and is thus part of an unusually high-profile group of shareholders. Alongside Google, Amazon and Microsoft are also among the prominent backers in the AI sector, with Amazon announcing an additional investment of 5 billion dollars in Anthropic this week. In return, Anthropic committed to spending up to 100 billion dollars on cloud capacity with Amazon.

The constellation is noteworthy in that Google simultaneously acts as both a competitor and a partner to Anthropic. While Google competes in the AI market with its own model Gemini, the company is, through Google Cloud, one of Anthropic’s central infrastructure providers — particularly for access to so-called Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), specialized AI chips developed in-house.

Strategic Background

The investment comes in the context of intense competition for computing capacity in the AI industry. Anthropic had recently been struggling with bottlenecks in the availability of its assistant Claude and responded with a series of infrastructure agreements, including a deal with cloud provider CoreWeave as well as the expanded partnership with Google and chipmaker Broadcom for TPU-based computing capacity from 2027 onwards.

Anthropic was most recently valued at 350 billion dollars in February. According to reports, investors are now willing to value the company at 800 billion dollars or more. Anthropic is also said to be considering an IPO as early as October.

Latest Model with Restricted Access

Alongside the investment news, Anthropic has introduced its most powerful model to date, called Mythos, to a limited circle of partners. The model is said to offer significant applications in the field of cybersecurity, which is why Anthropic is initially restricting broader access in order to evaluate potential risks together with selected organizations. According to reports, however, the model has already fallen into unauthorized hands.
