Mistral Bought Austrian Emmi AI at €330M Valuation – Report
French AI company Mistral AI has valued Austrian startup Emmi AI at up to 330 million euros as part of an acquisition. This is reported by the European technology magazine Sifted, citing internal documents in the editorial team’s possession.
According to the Sifted report, the deal is a combined cash-and-stock transaction. An independent audit of the transaction found that Mistral valued the Linz-based company at up to 330 million euros. The exact split between cash and Mistral shares is officially undisclosed, though typically in deals between startups a larger portion runs through company equity.
When approached by Trending Topics, the information regarding Mistral’s valuation of Emmi AI was neither confirmed nor denied.
For existing Emmi shareholders — including the founders as well as investors Speedinvest, Serena VC, 3VC, and PUSH — the deal could prove particularly lucrative. Mistral was most recently valued at around 14 billion dollars in September 2025. Should the company significantly increase its value in an upcoming funding round, the Mistral shares received would appreciate in value accordingly.
What Emmi AI does
Emmi AI was founded in December 2024 as a spin-off of NXAI and the Johannes Kepler University Linz. Founders Johannes Brandstetter, Dennis Just, and Miks Mikelsons built a team of around 35 researchers within a matter of months, drawn from institutions such as Oxford, TU Munich, Sorbonne, UPenn, and Harvard.
The company specialises in so-called Large Engineering Models and Physics AI: AI models capable of understanding and simulating physical processes. Concrete application areas include, among others:
- Real-time stabilisation of power grids
- Optimisation of injection moulding processes in manufacturing
- Virtual crash tests in the automotive industry
Emmi AI had closed a seed round of 15 million euros at the time of its founding, considered the largest seed financing of an Austrian startup. With the acquisition by Mistral, Linz will now be developed into a central hub for the industrial engineering division within the French AI company.
Strategic significance for Mistral
Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch described the acquisition as a strategic step towards industrial AI applications.
“This strategic acquisition consolidates Mistral AI’s leadership position in the field of industrial AI and makes us the preferred partner for manufacturers in demanding sectors such as aerospace, the automotive industry, and the semiconductor industry,” said Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral AI.
For Mistral, the deal represents a clear strategic shift: from a generalist B2B provider to a specialised provider of industrial AI solutions. Emmi AI contributes technological depth and research expertise, while Mistral provides sales, infrastructure, and an existing customer base.
