OpenAI Kills Sora and Scraps Billion-Dollar Disney Deal in Strategic Retreat

OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of its video generation tool Sora, just a few months after its launch in September 2024. Sam Altman’s company announced on Tuesday that both the TikTok-like Sora app and API access for developers will be shut down. The decision marks the end of an ambitious project that was intended to enable users to create short video clips based on text inputs, view videos published by others, and remix clips.

The shutdown of Sora also brings an end to the partnership with Disney announced in December, which had envisioned an investment of one billion dollars. The agreement would have allowed Disney to license more than 200 characters — including Mickey Mouse and Luke Skywalker — within the Sora platform. Altman had stated at the time that demand for Disney characters on the platform had been exceptionally high. Disney’s stock rose by approximately 2.5 percent on the day of the announcement. However, according to people familiar with the matter, the planned billion-dollar investment never materialized, as OpenAI began to shift its strategic direction.

Strategic Realignment Following Code Red

The decision fits into a broader realignment that Altman initiated in December by declaring a Code Red within OpenAI. The company is now focusing more intensively on core priorities, including competing with Anthropic for business customers and defending ChatGPT’s lead over Google Gemini and other rivals. CFO Sarah Friar announced, in parallel with the Sora shutdown, that OpenAI has raised an additional ten billion dollars from investors — on top of a funding round of 110 billion dollars in February. The company is thereby moving toward a possible IPO.

Sora suffered from disappointing user adoption and challenging economics. The platform was unable to build an engaged user base, and demand for Disney-like content remained limited. Video generation consumes significant computing power, which is both expensive and scarce for AI labs. This resource intensity made the business model increasingly problematic, while the company simultaneously faced competitive pressure in other areas.

Focus on Robotics and the Physical World

OpenAI will now redirect its resources toward advanced robotics and AI models capable of navigating the physical world. ChatGPT’s image generation feature remains unaffected by the decision. Disney stated that it respects OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to set priorities elsewhere. The entertainment company intends to continue working with AI platforms to find new ways to reach fans, while using technology responsibly and respecting intellectual property and the rights of creatives.

The development underscores the volatile nature of the AI market, in which companies rapidly shift between different product approaches. Reports suggest that OpenAI is working on a ChatGPT desktop super-app to simplify its product portfolio and streamline the user experience. A focus on practical applications and business customers appears to take precedence over experimental projects such as Sora, as the company prepares to compete with established tech giants.
