The Berlin-based startup Plato has completed a seed funding round of $14.5 million. Plato is developing an AI-native operating system for wholesalers. The platform automates sales processes, quote generation, and ERP workflows. Atomico is leading the round, joined by Cherry Ventures, Discovery Ventures, and D11Z, the investment arm of Lidl founder Dieter Schwarz.
Wholesalers struggle with skilled labor shortages, thin margins, and the digital expectations of modern B2B buyers. Plato leverages agent-based AI that unlocks hidden ERP data and automates manual tasks. Sales teams gain an AI copilot that proactively identifies risks and opportunities. The company has already won several leading European wholesalers with six-figure contract volumes – averaging over €100,000 with software margins of 90 percent. The platform promises up to 15 percent revenue growth, five hours saved in quote processes, and tenfold higher sales efficiency.
From Family Business to “Tech Champion”
Benedikt Nolte, Matthias Heinrich Morales, and Oliver Birch founded Plato in 2024. The idea emerged from Nolte’s family-run wholesale business, which struggled with outdated software and staff shortages. “We experienced the challenges firsthand in my family’s wholesale business and developed Plato together with experts to rethink how the industry operates,” says Nolte. “We’re building the AI operating system for wholesale, starting with an intelligent automation platform for sales. With this funding, we’re scaling Plato to transform the entire industry and build a tech champion for the trading economy – from Germany, for the world.”
This practice-driven origin shapes the startup’s industry-focused approach. The founders combine deep sector expertise with technical execution capability. Wholesale remains massively underserved with modern software despite its economic importance – a gap Plato aims to close through vertical AI specialization. The platform is purpose-built for the industry’s needs and integrates with existing ERP systems.
International Expansion
The fresh funding enables Plato to scale internationally and expand its product portfolio. The company will broaden its vertical offering to customer service and procurement. Andreas Helbig, partner at Atomico, emphasizes: “What particularly impressed us about Plato is the exceptional quality of the founding team. The team has a genuine ‘right to win’ in this space and is passionate about wholesale.”
Atomico, founded by Skype founder Niklas Zennström, currently manages assets of around five billion dollars and has worked with over 100 teams since 2006, including Klarna, Supercell, and Graphcore. The continued investment from existing investor Cherry Ventures underscores confidence in Plato’s growth trajectory.
